Before the War
There was movement towards a more peaceful time in the years leading up to the war; the Nobel prize was created by Alfred Nobel, in 1896 the first modern Olympic games were held, women’s suffrage was brought about, and the Hague Tribunal was created as a world court to settle disputes instead of resorting to war.
However, the culmination of other world events and various nations' attitudes at the time soon brought about the first World War.
