Alliances
Alliances are formal agreements between two or more nations or powers to cooperate and come to one another’s defense.
Countries often made alliances to try to deter other countries from attacking. It began with Germany making an attempt to keep France from trying to avenge the Franco-Prussian War. Russia backed Serbia, while Germany backed Austria-Hungary.
The two sets of crucial alliances in WWI were:
The Triple Alliance (Central Powers): Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy (Italy secretly switched sides half-way through the war)
and
The Triple Entente (Allied Powers): Britain, France, Russia

Alliances even played a role in encouraging men to enlist to fight, as seen in the British poster pictured to the left. It refers to a brutal attack by Germany on Belgium at the beginning of the war, and was used to gain sympathy from men would had not yet enlisted.
